Nepal Tourist Vehicle organized the exclusive event, the "Kathmandu to Kodari Day Return." This unique day trip invites you to explore the intriguing border town of Kodari, and the ritual site Tatopani, offering a glimpse into the cultural, historical, and natural richness that defines this unique destination. Join us for a day filled with discovery, adventure, and the allure of the border town.
Kodari is a small village located at an elevation of 2,515 meters at the border with Tibet-China. The village is situated at the end-point of the Arniko Highway, which connects Kodari with the capital city of Kathmandu. Kodari is 110.1 km away from Kathmandu, which takes 3 hours and 49 minutes via the Araniko Highway. Kodari is a major border crossing from Nepal into the Tibet Autonomous Region.
On the other side is the town of Zhangmu (also known as Dram or Khasa in Nepali), located in Nyalam County, Shigatse Prefecture of Tibet, which is a popular trade market for Nepali businessmen. Hundreds of people from Nepal visit the Chinese markets for essential goods and household items. Trade is not one-sided. Chinese people also come to the Nepalese side for the goods they require.
On August 31, 2017, the border crossing reopened for international tourists, where it was formerly only open for local travel and trade, and travel between Nepal and Tibet once again became possible for tourists heading for Lhasa.
Generally speaking, while it is not a problem for foreigners to travel to Tibet, it requires careful planning in advance, and adherence to regulations. By working with a registered tour company and obtaining the necessary permits, you can experience the unique culture and beauty of Tibet.
On the other hand, Tatopani, one of the ritual sites, lies near Kodari. The name of the village itself is the Nepali word for “hot water”–Tatopani was widely known for its hot springs. Tourists from around the country used to come to this village to help cure ailments ranging from rheumatism to paralysis. Almost all the houses in Tatopani are either small hotels or guest lodges. People mostly come to this place due to religious beliefs. Join us on this day trip to uncover the mystique and charm that Kodari has to offer.
