Current Notes (18 October 2026)
The drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara is one of Nepal’s most popular road journeys. It links the capital’s temples and heritage squares with the lakes and mountain views of Pokhara. The route follows the Prithvi Highway for about 200–206 km, running beside the Trishuli and Marsyangdi rivers past terraced hills, riverside villages, suspension bridges and views of the Annapurna and Manaslu ranges. By private vehicle the trip usually takes 5.5 to 6.5 hours, depending on traffic, weather and how often you stop. A private vehicle with a driver lets you travel at your own pace, stop wherever you like and arrive relaxed instead of worn out by a crowded bus.
The highway is fully paved, but it is a working mountain road and its condition changes with the seasons. The stretch from Mugling to Dumre is the best maintained, and the final leg from Damauli to Pokhara is wide and smooth. The gorge between Naubise and Mugling, especially the Krishnabhir section, is prone to landslides during and after the monsoon. Single-lane traffic and short delays are common there. This is why an experienced local driver matters. Our drivers check road and weather updates every morning, plan the departure time around current conditions and know how to handle delays safely.
A private tour also turns the drive into part of the holiday. Malekhu, about 80 km from Kathmandu, is known for fresh river fish. Mugling, roughly halfway, is the main lunch stop with the widest choice of restaurants. Damauli offers a quiet tea break with mountain views. With extra time, you can detour to the Manakamana cable car at Kurintar, a ride to a hilltop temple with wide views across the valley, which adds about 1.5 to 2.5 hours. The hilltop town of Bandipur, with its old Newari bazaar, is another rewarding side trip on the way.
Nepal Tourist Vehicle offers a vehicle for every group size and budget:
Every vehicle comes with a professional driver and is inspected at our own garage in Tinkune before departure.
The Kathmandu–Pokhara trip can be booked as a one-way transfer, a return trip, or part of a longer tour. Many travelers combine it with Pokhara sightseeing (Lakeside, Sarangkot, Davis Falls, the World Peace Pagoda and Begnas Lake) or with a wider circuit through Chitwan National Park and Lumbini. Trekkers often use the same vehicle for a drop-off at Nayapul, Besisahar or other Annapurna trailheads. For multi-day tours, the driver stays with you throughout, and the driver’s food and accommodation are stated clearly in your quote.
October to April is the best time to travel, with clear skies, stable roads and the best mountain views. Spring and autumn are also the busiest seasons, and demand peaks during Dashain and Tihar, so book early. The monsoon months of June to September carry a higher risk of landslides and delays. Travel is still possible then, but allow extra time and keep your schedule flexible. Whatever the season, leaving Kathmandu before 7 a.m. avoids the worst traffic at Kalanki and gives you a buffer for any slow sections.
Since 2010, Nepal Tourist Vehicle has helped travelers, families, trekkers, tour operators and businesses travel safely across Nepal. We are government registered (Reg. No. 694788) and tourism licensed (License No. 1121), with a fleet of more than 100 vehicles and 24/7 support during every journey. To get a clear, itemized quote with no hidden charges, send us your travel date, pickup point, number of passengers, luggage and planned stops. We’ll recommend the right vehicle and take care of the rest.

Kathmandu Pokhara Tour
About 200–206 km from central Kathmandu to Pokhara Lakeside. The route follows the Prithvi Highway, which runs 174 km from Naubise to Pokhara, plus the drive out of Kathmandu Valley.
Usually 5.5 to 6.5 hours by private car, SUV or jeep. Traffic, weather, road works and the number of stops can add time. A bus normally takes 6 to 8 hours.
Yes. The whole route is paved, but surface quality varies by section and season. The Mugling–Dumre and Damauli–Pokhara sections are the smoothest. The gorge between Naubise and Mugling can have potholes and rough patches after the monsoon.
Yes, it is one of Nepal’s busiest and most-used highways. The main risk is landslides in the Trishuli gorge, especially at Krishnabhir, during and just after the monsoon. Traveling with an experienced local driver who checks conditions each morning, leaving early, and avoiding driving during heavy rain make the journey much safer.
Krishnabhir is a landslide-prone stretch between Malekhu and Mugling. It is one of the main chokepoints on the highway. Even when the road is open, it may run as single-lane traffic, causing delays. After heavy rain, short closures are possible. Our drivers check its status before every departure.
October to April is the most reliable period, with clear skies, dry roads and good mountain views. Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the most popular seasons. During the monsoon (June–September), travel is still possible, but you should allow extra time for landslides and delays.
We recommend leaving before 7 a.m. This avoids the heavy traffic at Kalanki and Naubise, gives you a buffer for slow sections, and gets you to Pokhara in time to enjoy the afternoon at Lakeside.
Where do we stop along the way?
Popular stops include:
Your driver will suggest clean restaurants, tea houses and viewpoints, and you can stop for photos whenever you like.
Yes. The Manakamana cable car at Kurintar adds about 1.5 to 2.5 hours to the trip. The hilltop town of Bandipur is a short detour from Dumre. Many travelers stay a night there to break the journey. Tell us in advance so we can plan the timing.
Which vehicle is best for the trip?

| 1–4 people, quiet and eco-friendly | BYD Atto 2 electric SUV |
| 1–5 people, comfort and luggage | Land Cruiser or SUV |
| 8–14 people | Hiace van |
| 15+ people | Coaster or tourist bus |
Yes. The BYD Atto 2 handles the Kathmandu–Pokhara route well. Because hills, traffic and air conditioning reduce real-world range, our driver usually plans one short charging stop on the way, often combined with a meal or tea break.
